from hand drawn collage to art quilt part 1

August 15, 2020

I have experimented in the past with having my collages printed on fabric to turn them into art quilts. Mostly it consisted of me trying to get a high enough resolution scan (which I wasn’t sure was possible since I work so small) and then scaling it up and to print at spoonflower.

I liked what I came up with but there was something missing. Basically I printed the collage exactly as it was and honestly? It was a complete composition. There wasn’t really anything left for me to do with it in terms of making unique additions. Left me zero motivation to work on it and I’ve done exactly that – nada.

I got an ipad pro earlier this year and I’ve been bonding with the Procreate app. I never really thought I could warm to working digitally. But this is very much like drawing in a sketchbook – with the added bonus of being able to erase things. I decided to choose two collages from my 80 collage series and work through the process of translating them into a digital format to print on fabric and then stitch. Thought I’d take you along with me. ????

The thing that I’m working on now is deciding what components I want to print on the fabric. I need to leave SPACE for stitching and possibly embellishments. I don’t know what exactly the entire thing will look like. I trust Art Brain’s participation in the process. I’m giving myself until Sunday August 29 to work on this part. Weird to have a deadline? I need one or I can “fine tune” (aka obsess) forever. If I have a date that the digital items need to be done, I actually feel less stressed because it’s not open ended.

Here is where I’m at so far them:

Next weekend I’ll post the final digital version and we will talk about what size I’m going to print them at. That’s going to be something for me to really consider because I really do like to work small. But I want to stretch myself and at the moment am thinking fat quarter size. Still small enough for me to hand stitch. I’m also considering machine stitching. (And no, the sky isn’t falling. I checked.)

More soon!
